New from our epicurean cabinet – Anis de Flavigny sweets!

Anis de Flavigny is a French heritage brand of sweet mints, with finished flavors such as Rose, Citron and Orange Blossom. At the core of each treat is a tiny aniseed, which is slowly rolled in a spinning vat as it becomes covered in layer after layer with a naturally sweetened syrup, and I absolutely love them.

They have been made with this same process for centuries, and it was documented in the 1700s Enlightenment Age’s Encyclopedia, which I previously wrote about in my Le Blog article about gold leaf.

Dites moi – How old is this French heritage line of treats?

Anis de l’Abbaye de Flavigny as we know it today has been owned by the Troubat family since 1923, and is now being run by the family’s 3rd generation.

What is most fascinating though is the tradition of the anis treats being crafted in Flavigny by the monks at the local monastery. There are historical records of the treats being gifted to traveling dignitaries in the nearby town of Semur-en-Auxois all the way back in 1591.

Ooh la la, tell me more about the town of Flavigny!

Flavigny-sur-Ozerain is a walled hilltop town in the Burgundy region of France, and its origins as a strategic fortification can be traced back to the year 52 BC, when Caesar conquered this Gaullic province.

Today, Flavigny is listed in the national Les Plus Beaux Villages de France registry (“The Most Beautiful Villages of France”).

In fact it is such a perfectly picturesque example of a classic French village that it was chosen to be the filming location for the 2000 movie Chocolat.
